Unlocking Digital Commerce at Panadol
Digital Commerce
Business Model and Opportunities
Overview and Key Challenge
Panadol has historically struggled with its e-commerce presence and sales within Haleon’s brand portfolio. The fragmented global retail landscape and stringent regulations on OTC medicine sales online have hindered our ability to capitalize on emerging opportunities. More importantly, consumers experiencing acute pain—such as headaches or body aches—seek immediate relief rather than waiting days for delivery. In mid-2022, Haleon’s CEO, Brian McNamara, set an ambitious goal of achieving 18% e-commerce contribution to net sales. At Panadol, we began exploring strategies to enhance our performance and drive growth in alignment with this target.

My Contribution
Recognizing the pivotal role of e-commerce platforms in the consumer journey and their potential to reinforce communication strategies—such as enhancing understanding and establishing differentiation—I initiated a comprehensive overhaul of our online presence. This began with addressing foundational elements like content and search visibility, followed by the development of retail channel-specific strategies to navigate the fragmented retail landscape.
However, I identified that the greatest opportunity lay in overcoming the primary shopping barrier: speed of delivery. Collaborating with our LATAM region, I spearheaded pilot projects with our quick commerce and delivery partner, Rappi, to refine an operating model that delivers Panadol within minutes of ordering. This approach ensures swift pain relief, allowing consumers to resume their daily lives. The insights gained from these initiatives have informed a dedicated Quick Commerce strategy for Panadol, which is now scaling to other markets.

Turning Crisis into Opportunity
Driving Frequency with Magnum Mini Post-Crisis

Overview and Key Challenge
The blockbuster launch of Magnum in 2008 revolutionized the ice cream category in Singapore, marking the biggest brand debut for Unilever with a substantial budget allocated to build the brand and drive penetration and growth. The launch generated significant buzz and excitement, supported by a comprehensive 360° activation plan. However, this early success was marred by the melamine milk scandal later that year, during which Magnum faced false rumors alleging the use of tainted milk in its production. As a result, sales plummeted, our growth trajectory reversed, and retailers threatened to withdraw stock from their shelves.
My Contribution
Although the brand weathered the scandal, it did not emerge unscathed. Faced with mounting pressure to deliver a strong return on investment (ROI) and restore retailers’ trust in the brand, I, as the brand manager for Magnum, sought ways to quickly reignite market excitement. Upon reviewing the global category portfolio, I identified a significant opportunity in introducing Magnum Mini to enhance brand penetration and drive consumption frequency. This initiative also aimed to reclaim shelf space in retailers, improving brand visibility, availability, and sales.

I collaborated with our finance partner to develop a robust business case, forecast stock requirements with supply chain partners, and plan a campaign that was executed in record time. Magnum Mini proved to be a tremendous success, helping to accelerate Magnum’s market share to 42% within three years.
